What really happens when things expire

WOF

Insurer can decline your claim. Under NZ law, if a safety defect that a current WOF would have caught contributed to your accident — bald tyres, faulty brakes, broken lights — your insurer can refuse to pay out. Even if your premiums are paid up.

REGO

$200 fine on the spot. Police and parking wardens can issue fines immediately. Expired rego also gives your insurer grounds to investigate your claim more closely.

RUC

$200 fine for diesel and EV drivers. Road User Charges run out by distance, not date — easy to forget until it's too late. OiMate tracks your RUC distance and warns you before you run out.
